Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chica.
Etymology: < French chica (1808 in the work cited below), apparently < Chaima chica (recorded in a Spanish work in 1680). Compare scientific Latin chica, specific name of this plant ( A. Bonpland & A. von Humboldt Plantes equinoxiales I. (1808) 107).A. Bonpland and A. von Humboldt encountered the plant (and its uses) on their joint expedition from 1799–1804 (compare quot. 1818). Chaima is a Cariban language of the Orinoco region.
A red pigment obtained from the leaves of the tropical South American plant Fridericia chica (family Bignoniaceae). Cf. carajura n.Chica originally became known to Europeans as a pigment used by certain South American tribes for painting the skin.

Etymology: < Spanish chica girl (18th cent.), feminine form corresponding to chico boy, young man (18th cent.), use as noun of chico small (12th cent.), probably ultimately related to classical Latin ciccum proverbially worthless object, of unknown origin.Compare Catalan xic, chic little, of little worth, Spanish chico little, Italian cica (noun) small thing. Classical Latin ciccum is explained by ancient authors (e.g. Varro) as denoting the thin membrane in a pomegranate.
colloquial (chiefly U.S.).
Originally in Spanish-speaking contexts: a girl or young woman. Also: spec. a girl or young woman of Latin American origin or descent. Frequently as a familiar or affectionate form of address.
