Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin aegis.
Etymology: < classical Latin aegis skin shield of Jupiter or Minerva < ancient Greek αἰγίς skin shield of Zeus or Athene, probably < αἰγ- , αἴξ goat (see Aegipan n.) + -ις (see -id suffix2). Compare Middle French, French égide (1512 in sense 1, 1569 in sense 2), Italian egida (a1382 in sense 1, a1764 in sense 2).
1. Classical Mythology. A shield, piece of defensive armour, or garment carried or worn by Zeus (Jupiter) or Athene (Minerva); (also) a carved or painted representation of this.Perhaps originally a goatskin; in classical times frequently represented as bearing the head of Medusa, and imagined as the source of protection for worshippers and terror among enemies.
