Etymology: < church n.1 + master n.1, probably largely as an alteration of kirkmaster n. (the usual southern term being churchwarden n.; compare also churchman n. 1). Compare Middle Dutch kerkmeester, Middle Low German kerkmēster, Middle High German kirchmeister (German Kirchenmeister, Kirchmeister).
Now rare.
