Etymology: < city n. + -less suffix. Compare townless adj.In sense 2 after ancient Greek ἄπολις in the phrase πόλις ἄπολις a city that is no city, a ruined city; compare also quot. 1829 at sense 1, where cityless is translating ancient Greek ἄπολις in the sense ‘without city, state, or country’.
