Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ciliata.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ciliata, group name ( M. Perty Zur Kenntniss kleinster Lebensformen (1852) 22) < post-classical Latin ciliatus (see ciliate adj.) + -a -a suffix2. Compare scientific Latin ciliata, specific name (1758 or earlier).
Zoology.
With plural agreement. An order, class, or subphylum comprising the ciliate protozoans; (also ciliata) protozoans of this group (collectively or individually); ciliates.Now usually replaced by the phylum Ciliophora (see Ciliophora n.).
