Etymology: < classical Latin Cimōlia, a very soft hydrous silicate of alumina, used in washing and in medicine, use as noun (short for crēta Cimōlia Cimolian chalk) of the feminine of Cimōlius , adjective < Cimōlus (ancient Greek Κίμωλος ), the name of the island of Kimolos (formerly Cimolus), one of the Cyclades + -ius , suffix forming adjectives. Compare cimolite n.Compare ancient Greek Κιμωλία γῆ Cimolian earth, Hellenistic Greek Κιμωλία Cimolia, Middle French, French chimolée (14th cent.), cimolée (1580 or earlier), cimolie (1572 or earlier), cimolia (1549).
