Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek κλιματάρχης , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek κλιματάρχης (in plural, κλιματάρχαι ) order of divine beings ruling terrestrial regions ( < Hellenistic Greek κλίματ- , κλίμα region, clime (see climate n.1) + ancient Greek -αρχης -arch comb. form1) + -ic suffix. In sense 2 probably arising from a misapprehension of the dictionary record (compare quot. 1828 at sense 1).In quot. 1794 at sense 1 Taylor is citing Olympiodorus's Commentary on Plato's Alcibiades (6th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
