Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Latin aeromanticus ; aero- comb. form, -mantic comb. form.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin aeromanticus (1512; < aeromantia aeromancy n. + -icus -ic suffix), or < aero- comb. form + -mantic comb. form, after aeromancy n. Compare earlier aeromancer n.According to Isidore (a636) Varro (1st cent. b.c.) distinguished four types of divination: geomancy, hydromancy, aeromancy, and pyromancy (compare quot. 1632). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ē:əromæ·ntik) /ˌeɪərəʊˈmæntɪk/.
