Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: aero- comb. form, Greek σιδηρίτης.
Etymology: < aero- comb. form + ancient Greek σιδηρίτης of iron (see siderite n.1): see quot. 1863. Compare aerosiderolite n. and earlier aerolite n. Compare also siderite n.1 7.
Now rare.
A meteorite consisting mainly of nickel and iron; an iron meteorite. Also: the mineral of which this is composed; meteoric iron. Cf. aerolite n., aerosiderolite n.Now usually shortened to siderite (see siderite n.1 7).
