单词 aglaophotis
释义

aglaophotisn.

Brit. /ˌaɡleɪəˈfəʊtᵻs/, U.S. /ˌæɡleɪəˈfoʊdəs/
Forms: Old English–early Middle English aglaofotis, 1500s– aglaophotis, 1500s–1600s aglaophotides (plural).
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin aglaophōtis.
Etymology: < classical Latin aglaophōtis (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ἀγλαοϕῶτις , name of a plant with supposed magical properties, also listed by Dioscorides as a name of the peony, Paeonia officinalis, literally ‘brightly shining’ < ἀγλαός splendid (perhaps related to γαλήνη calm, or ἀγάλλεσθαι to glory, exult: see agalma n.) + ϕῶς light (see photo- comb. form).More or less fantastical accounts of the plant are given by Pliny and the Hellenistic Greek writer Aelian. It is not clear whether the tale of the plant's supposed luminescence gave rise to the name or was inspired by it; some authors (identifying the plant with the peony) allude rather to a bright colour. The word was reborrowed in the 17th cent.; there is no continuity with the Old English and early Middle English use.
Now archaic or historical.
A legendary plant to which various medicinal or magical properties have been attributed, sometimes identified with the peony. The passage in quot. OE has no exact counterpart in the Latin source, although it appears to derive at least in part from the chapter on the peony (in which aglaofotis is also given as a synonym for peonia); the plant in the passage has therefore been tentatively identified with the peony; there is no support for the identification with the foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, found in MS Harley 6258B.

[Note] It was also called Aglaophotis. It is the Atropa Mandragora of modern botanists.
1905 Proc. Amer. Acad. Arts & Sci. 40 492 Baaras is said to be used to ‘drive out demons’, while aglaophotis is good for epilepsy,—doubtless the same malady in each case.
1963 B. Battershaw tr. H. S. J. Rahner Greek Myths & Christian Myst. (1971) v. 244 Hopfner has shown beyond doubt that this name ‘aglaophotis’ was given to more than one plant, possibly to any plant which because of its brightness was held to come under the influence of Hecate-Selene.
