Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. comico-serious Brit. /ˌkɒmᵻkəʊˈsɪərɪəs/, U.S. /ˌkɑməkoʊˈsɪriəs/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin comico-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin comico-, combining form (e.g. in comicotragicus comico-tragic (frequently from 1539 in work titles)) of classical Latin cōmicus comic adj.; compare -o- connective. Compare tragico- comb. form.Attested earliest in the late 16th cent. in the Latin adaptation comico-tragical (after post-classical Latin comicotragicus). Formations within English are found from the second half of the 18th cent., e.g. comico-serious.
