Etymology: < classical Latin agnātiōn-, agnātiō birth of further offspring after the father's will has been made, blood relationship through the father or a common male ancestor < agnāt- , past participial stem of agnāscī (see agnate n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French, French agnation (1539), Catalan agnació , Spanish agnación (1570 or earlier), Portuguese agnação (1644), Italian agnazione (1618). Compare earlier agnate n.
