[after German Fetischcharakter der Ware (1867 in the passage translated in quot. 1887); compare Warenfetischismus (1899 or earlier)] (in Marxist thought) the belief, in a capitalist society, that commodities are endowed with autonomous existence and intrinsic economic value independent of the investment of labour that went into their production (cf. reification n. 2); (in later use more generally) the tendency to place excessive value on material goods.Quot. 1887 shows fetishism of commodities in equivalent use, in a translation of Marx.
