A non-commissioned officer in an infantry regiment ranking above a sergeant and below a warrant officer class II, originally having the duty of protecting the carrier of the regimental colours in the field of battle. Also: a similar rank in the Royal Marines. Abbreviation CSgt., C/Sgt.The rank was created in 1813 by George IV, then Prince Regent, as a recognition of the service of non-commissioned officers in the Peninsular War (1808–14). It was replaced by company quartermaster sergeant in 1914, although it continued to be used as an appointment in some regiments, and was officially reintroduced in 1947.

1813 General Order July 27 From the 25 June 1813 one Serjeant of the establishment in each Company of every Regiment of Infantry shall be designated ‘Colour Serjeant’..The duty of attending the Colours in the field shall at all times be performed by the Colour Serjeant.
