单词 comeuppance
释义

comeuppancen.

Brit. /kʌmˈʌp(ə)ns/, U.S. /(ˌ)kəˈməpəns/
Forms:

α. 1800s come-upence, 1800s come-uppunce, 1800s comeup'ans, 1800s–1900s come-up-ance, 1800s– come-uppance, 1900s– comeupance, 1900s– comeuppance, 1900s– comuppance.

β. English regional 1800s come-upping (Cornwall); U.S. regional 1800s come-uppings (plural), 1900s– come-uppins (plural).

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: to come up at come v. Phrasal verbs 1, -ance suffix.
Etymology: < to come up at come v. Phrasal verbs 1 (compare to come up 6b at come v. Phrasal verbs 1) + -ance suffix. In U.S. regional β. forms with reanalysis of the ending as showing the plural of -ing suffix1. An isolated apparent instance of the singular form in English regional use in Cornwall (see quot. 1880) perhaps shows an independent formation < -ing suffix1. Compare also rare U.S. regional (Louisiana) comings (plural), in the same sense (compare to have it coming at come v. 12b(c)):1947 H. L. Ballowe Lawd 10 He gwineter git his comin's.
Originally chiefly U.S. regional.
A deserved punishment; one's just deserts. Chiefly in to get one's comeuppance.
