Etymology: < classical Latin āli-, combining form (in e.g. ālipes aliped adj.) of āla wing (see ala n.1); compare -i- connective.Earliest in borrowings < Latin (e.g. aliform adj., aliferous adj., aliped adj.). Formations within English are found from the mid 19th cent. (compare e.g. alisphenoid n.).
