Etymology: < scientific Latin Phlebotomus, genus name, alteration (1846) of Flebotomus (attributed to C. Rondani Sopra una specie di insetto dittero: memoria prima per servire alla ditterologia italiana (1840) 12) < post-classical Latin phlebotomus (also flebotomus ) lancet used for phlebotomy (see phlebotome n.). Compare earlier use of scientific Latin phlebotomus as a specific name (1835).

Entomology and Medicine.

A cosmopolitan genus of small, very hairy sandflies (family Psychodidae), many of which are vectors of infectious diseases such as leishmaniasis and sandfly (phlebotomus) fever; (also phlebotomus) a sandfly of this genus.
