Etymology: < French convenable, Old French also covenable , < stem of conven-ir , conven-ant to meet, to agree ( < Latin convenīre to convene v.): see -able suffix, -ble suffix. Compare Provençal convenable , convenhable . The earlier form was covenable adj., whence also the early variants comenable, conable. But convenable gradually became the established form in French, and is found in English beside covenable down to the 17th cent. Johnson (1755) says ‘Not now in use’.
Obsolete.
