Etymology: < post-classical Latin anthrac-, anthrax carbuncle, pustule (see anthrax n.), in scientific Latin also (in form Anthrax) as genus name of the bee-fly ( J. A. Scopoli Entomologia Carniolica (1763) 358) + -iform comb. form.In sense 1 probably after French anthraciforme (1819 or earlier). Compare earlier anthracic adj., anthracoid adj. In sense 2 after scientific Latin anthraciformis, specific name (1832 or earlier with reference to the bee-fly; 1800 with reference to a different genus of insects); the scientific Latin genus name of the bee-fly is probably directly < ancient Greek ἀνθρακ- , ἄνθραξ charcoal (see anthrax n.), with allusion to the black colour of the fly.

Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
