Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian agrodolce.
Etymology: < Italian agrodolce (adjective) that tastes both sour and sweet (1661 or earlier in cedro dall'agro-dolce , limone dall'agro-dolce , etc.), (noun) a sweet-and-sour sauce (1879; compare salsa agro dolce (late 17th cent. or earlier)) < agro sour, acrid (1310; a1292 in sense ‘harsh’; < classical Latin ācer , ācris acrid adj.) + dolce sweet (see douce adj.). Compare earlier aigre-doux adj.
