Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin albūgin-, albūgō.
Etymology: < classical Latin albūgin-, albūgō white opaque spot on the eye, in post-classical Latin also white of an egg (from 13th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources) < albus white (see album n.2) + -gō , suffix forming nouns. Compare Middle French, French albugo (1492 in medical use). With sense 1 compare leucoma n.In plural form albugines after the Latin plural form.
1. Medicine. A whitish spot on the cornea; a corneal opacity; disease of the eye characterized by this. Now rare.
