Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin agrypnia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin agrypnia (1501 or earlier; already 5th cent. in Martianus Capella as the name of the maidservant of Philology) < ancient Greek ἀγρυπνία sleeplessness, wakefulness, time of watching, in Byzantine Greek specifically denoting the Easter vigil < ἄγρυπνος wakeful ( < ἄγρο- agro- comb. form + ὕπνος sleep (see hypno- comb. form), the original sense being ‘who sleeps out of doors’) + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare French agrypnie (1771 in this sense).
Medicine.
The state of wakefulness or sleeplessness; insomnia, (in later use) esp. when severe and due to a disorder of or injury to the brain; an instance of this.
