Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin costellatus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin costellatus (1811 or earlier) < costella (1803 or earlier; < classical Latin costa rib (see costa n.1) + -ella -ella suffix) + classical Latin -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare earlier costate adj., costated adj.
Chiefly Palaeontology.
Finely ribbed or ridged.
