Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin alchimilla, alchemilla.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alchimilla (also alchemilla) lady's mantle (1540 or earlier) < Arabic al-kemeliḵ < al the + kemeliḵ lady's mantle, with subsequent folk-etymological alteration after post-classical Latin alchimia alchemy n. and classical Latin -illa -illa suffix, with reference to the belief of alchemists that dew from the leaves of this plant could turn base metals to gold. Compare Middle French, French alchimille (1562 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny), French alchémille (1866), Italian alchimilla (1561 or earlier; also alchemilla).
Any of numerous herbaceous perennials of the genus Alchemilla (family Rosaceae), comprising the lady's mantles, which are widely distributed in the north temperate zone and mountainous regions of tropical Africa and are distinguished by palmately lobed leaves and cymes of tiny green or yellowish flowers. Also (in form Alchemilla): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 123.
