单词 alikeness
释义

alikenessn.

Brit. /əˈlʌɪknᵻs/, U.S. /əˈlaɪknᵻs/
Forms: see alike adj. and -ness suffix; also Middle English alyckeness.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: alike adj., -ness suffix.
Etymology: < alike adj. + -ness suffix. Compare earlier ylikeness n.In early use sometimes difficult to distinguish from attestations of likeness n. preceded by indefinite article, as scribal word division is not always a reliable guide (compare quots. c1450, a1500). In form alyckeness in quot. a1500 perhaps showing shortening of long ī in *alīkness before the consonant group, but forms of the adjective may occasionally have shown short vowel also; compare forms of like adj., adv., conj., and prep. Compare also the following isolated example of late Old English alīcnesse , which, if not simply a scribal error, may perhaps show a form of anlikeness n. with reduction of the prefix (compare a- prefix3):OE Ælfric Interrogationes Sigewulfi in Genesin (Corpus Cambr. 162) xxvii, in Anglia (1884) 7 18 Seo soðe annys is understanden on þam worde: to ure anlicnysse [lOE Hatton 116 alicnesse].
The quality or fact of being alike; resemblance, similarity. Also: †a simile, an allegory (obsolete).
