单词 aimag
释义

aimagn.

Brit. /ˈeɪmaɡ/, /ˈʌɪmaɡ/, U.S. /ˈeɪˌmæɡ/, /ˈaɪˌmæɡ/
Inflections: Plural aimags, unchanged.
Forms:

α. 1700s aimack, 1700s aymak, 1700s– aimak, 1800s aymack.

β. 1900s– aimag, 1900s– aymag.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from various Turkic languages. Partly a borrowing from Mongolian. Etymons: French aimack; Mongolian aimag.
Etymology: In α. forms originally < French †aimack (1726 in the source translated in quot. 1729 at sense 1, now aïmag ); in later use < forms in the Turkic languages of Central Asia (compare Chaghatai aīmāq tribe, clan (17th cent. or earlier), Kazakh aymak , Kyrgyz aymak region, area; also Turkish oymak part of a tribe, clan), all < Mongolian aimag (see below). These forms were probably chiefly transmitted via other European languages; compare German Aimag (1761 or earlier as †Aimak ), Russian ajmak (1799 or earlier). In β. forms < Mongolian aimag (classical Mongolian ayimaγ) clan, tribe, proximate environment of a nomadic encampment, largest administrative division of modern Mongolia, province < a stem ai- denoting a part or division which can be further subdivided.Compare also the name of the Persian-speaking Aimak people in Afghanistan (Persian Aymāq; also more fully Čahār Aymāq, literally ‘four Aimags’), which ultimately derives from the same Turkic or Mongolian word. Compare the following, which may be the first attestation of the name in an English context, although it may also show a mistranslation of Chaghatai aīmāq tribe, clan:1826 J. Leyden & W. Erskine tr. Mem. Zehir-Ed-Din II. 9 Kabul and..Ghazni were places much exposed to external violence..as bodies of Turks, Moghuls, Aimâks, Wandering Tribes [1914 A. S. Beveridge tr. ‘clans and nomads (aīmāq u aḥsham)’], Afghans, Hazaras, Ils, and Uluses, were scattered over their territory.
