Etymology: < c- and -ox- (in cyclooxygenase n.).
Biochemistry and Medicine.
The enzyme cyclooxygenase. Frequently with distinguishing number designating its main isoenzymes: COX-1 n. a constitutive form, involved in physiological prostaglandin production. COX-2 n. a form that is inducible by pro-inflammatory cytokines and certain other substances.
