1954 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 22 May 1195/2 Until recently there was little evidence that a specific mineralocorticoid, especially potent in controlling electrolyte metabolism, was elaborated in man, but this objection must be overruled since the isolation of aldosterone (11, 21-dihydroxy-3, 20-diketo-4-pregnene-18-al), formerly called electrocortin.
1954 Lancet 12 June 1226/2 Because of the presence of an aldehyde group at the 18 position on the steroid ring the name ‘aldosterone’ has been proposed (in place of ‘electrocortin’).
1988 New Scientist 17 Dec. 14/2 Aldosterone removes sodium from the body, but people with abnormally high levels of the hormone tend to retain sodium.
1999 Triathlete June 47/1 Improved acclimatization also increases plasma aldosterone and renin (an enzyme formed in the kidneys) activity.
2009 K. R. Simpson Women’s Guide Thyroid Health ix. 110 Signs of low aldosterone are a reddish, swollen face and indications of water retention, like swollen hands and feet.
