Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: crypto- comb. form, -chrome comb. form.
Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + -chrome comb. form, after German Kryptochrom (in sense 1, A. Seybold 1942, in Forschungen u. Fortschritte 18 178/2; in sense 2, P. Karrer and E. Jucker 1946, in Helvetica chimica acta 29 229).
Biochemistry.
1. In form kryptochrome. A name proposed for: a plant pigment which has no apparent physiological function in the plant. rare. Now disused.

2. A carotenoid pigment found in plants which is sensitive to blue light. Now rare.Cryptochrome is an epoxide derivative of cryptoxanthin.
