Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: crypto- comb. form, amnesia n.
Etymology: < crypto- comb. form + -mnesia (in amnesia n.), after French cryptomnésie (1900 in the passage translated in quot. 1900). Compare cryptomnesic adj.
Chiefly Psychology.
The phenomenon of perceiving a latent or subconscious memory as an original thought or idea; latent or subconscious recollection.
