单词 dacoity
释义

dacoityn.

Brit. /dəˈkɔɪti/, U.S. /dəˈkɔɪdi/
Forms: 1800s dacoitee, 1800s decoitee, 1800s decoity, 1800s 1900s dacoitie, 1800s– dacoity, 1800s– dakaiti.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Bengali. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Etymons: Bengali ḍakaitī; Hindi ḍakaitī.
Etymology: < Bengali ḍakaitī and the similarly-formed Hindi ḍakaitī (also ḍākaitī) the practice of the dacoits < ḍakait dacoit n. + , suffix expressing belonging (see -i suffix2).In later use (especially in the form dacoity) perhaps sometimes reinterpreted as an English formation < dacoit n. + -y suffix3. The rare use denoting a person (see sense 2) developed within English; compare the more common thuggee n. 2 and the etymological note at that entry. The forms with -oi- reflect the pronunciation of the Bengali word.
1. In India (later also Pakistan and Nepal) and Burma (Myanmar): the system of banditry practised by dacoits; gang robbery. Also: an act or instance of crime committed by dacoits; a gang robbery. In the Indian penal code dacoity is defined as involving five or more people committing or attempting to commit a robbery.
