Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian moderato.
Etymology: < Italian moderato (end of the 17th cent. in this sense: see moderate adj. and n.), past participle of moderare to moderate < classical Latin moderārī (see moderate v., and compare moder v.).
Music.
A. adv.
As a musical direction: at a moderate pace or tempo. Also in extended use. Sometimes abbreviated mod., modo., mod.to.The direction is used either alone or qualifying other tempo designations, as allegro moderato (a little slower than allegro), andante moderato (a little faster than andante), etc.
