Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀλεκτρυών.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀλεκτρυών (name for) a cock < ἀλέκτωρ cock (see alectory n.) + -ών , suffix forming nouns, perhaps after ἀλκυών halcyon n. or Γηρυών, name of a mythical monster.In Greek mythology, Alectryon was the name of a young man, charged by Ares to stand guard outside the door while he made love to Aphrodite. Alectryon fell asleep, and Helios, the sun, walked in on the couple; as punishment Ares turned Alectryon into a cock.
Chiefly poetic. Now rare.
