Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἀλειπτικός.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀλειπτικός of or relating to athletic or gymnastic training < ancient Greek ἀλείπτης physical trainer, literally ‘anointer’ ( < ἀλείϕειν to anoint (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek λίπα oil, classical Latin linere to smear: see oblite v.2) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns; > classical Latin aliptēs ) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare post-classical Latin alipticus physical trainer (1528 or earlier), aliptica physical training (1556 or earlier).With aleiptic art (see quot. 1660) compare Hellenistic Greek (Doric) ἁ ἀλειπτικά , use as noun (short for ἀλειπτικὰ τέχνα art of athletic training) of feminine of ἀλειπτικός ; with aleiptic commentaries (see quot. 1702) compare Byzantine Greek ἀλειπτικὰ συγγράμματα treatises on athletic training.
