(in the British royal household) one of a group of four gentleman-ushers (gentleman-usher n.) each responsible in turn for attending or waiting on the sovereign in the presence chamber (cf. quarter waiter n.).By the middle of the 19th century, holders of the office of Gentleman-Usher Daily Waiter were no longer required to perform duties within the royal household, although the Senior Gentleman-Usher always concurrently held the office of Usher of the Black Rod. As a distinct category of Gentleman Usher, the post of Daily Waiter ceased to exist in the early 20th century.
