A star which emits little or no visible light, esp. one whose existence is inferred from indirect evidence, such as the eclipsing of other stars; (in later use also) a starlike body postulated to consist of dark matter (cf. dark matter n. 1).In quot. 1662: a star imagined as emitting dark rays.
