1. Any of the judges who make up the judiciary in the Isle of Man. Also: as a title, preceding a surname. The Isle of Man originally had two deemsters, each having jurisdiction over different parts of the Island: the sheadings of Glenfaba, Michael, and Ayre fell under that of the Northern Deemster, while the Southern Deemster had jurisdiction over the sheadings of Garff, Middle, and Rushen. Today the Manx judiciary consists of several deemsters, including the First Deemster (who also holds the office of Clerk of the Rolls and acts as the deputy governor of the Isle of Man), the Second Deemster, and the Judge of Appeal.
