Etymology: < post-classical Latin alexicacon preservative against evil, safeguard (1531 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀλεξίκακον , neuter of ἀλεξίκακος keeping off evil < ἀλέξειν to keep off (see alexin n.) + κακόν evil (see caco- comb. form). Compare classical Latin Alexicacos averter of evil, epithet of Hercules. N.E.D. (1884) indicates stress on the third syllable.
