Etymology: < medieval or modern Latin dēcrepitāre, < dē- down, away + -crepitāre to crackle, frequentative of crepāre to crack. Compare French décrépiter (1690 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter).
1. transitive. To calcine or roast (a salt or mineral) until it no longer crackles in the fire.
