Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin amblygōnium, amblygōnius; French ambligone.
Etymology: Originally (i, as noun) < classical Latin amblygōnium, ambligōnium obtuse-angled triangle (in texts on land surveying, of uncertain date, perhaps 2nd cent. a.d.), use as noun of neuter of amblygōnius, ambligōnius obtuse-angled (see below). Subsequently (as adjective) < (ii) French †ambligone (1562 in Middle French; now amblygone (1679)) and its etymon (iii) classical Latin amblygōnius, ambligōnius obtuse-angled < Hellenistic Greek ἀμβλυγώνιος obtuse-angled < ancient Greek ἀμβλύς blunt (of uncertain origin) + γωνία angle (see -gon comb. form).Compare Spanish ambligonio, adjective (1567). With use as noun compare Hellenistic Greek ἀμβλυγώνιον, denoting an obtuse angle.
