Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Ambroid.
Etymology: < German Ambroid (1884 or earlier) < post-classical Latin ambra amber n.2 + German -oid -oid suffix.The β. forms show remodelling after amber n.2 In German, the substance is also called Preßbernstein (1892 or earlier; now Pressbernstein), literally ‘pressed amber’.
