Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French defendance ; defend v., -ance suffix.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French defendance defence, resistance (13th cent. in Old French) < defendre defend v. + -ance -ance suffix. In later use independently < defend v. + -ance suffix.With form defendens perhaps compare -ence suffix.
