The place name. Delhi (Hindi Dillī) is the name of a city and Union Territory in India (in full National Capital Territory of Delhi; Hindi Rāṣṭrīya Rājdhānī Kṣetra Dillī), which includes New Delhi (Hindi Naī Dillī), the capital of India. Delhi occupies the territory of a succession of historical cities (not all of the same name), going back to at least the 10th cent. New Delhi originated as a planned government district founded by the British in 1911 and inaugurated in 1931. The place name is attested in English from at least the 17th cent. (in early use also as Delly, Dehli, etc.). Compare Indian Persian Dihlī (13th cent.), Hindi Dillī (14th cent.).
