Etymology: < Spanish alternativa right or status earned by an apprentice bullfighter entitling him to compete as a full matador (1872 or earlier), ceremony at which this new status is confirmed (1925 or earlier; chiefly in tomar la alternativa to earn the right to compete as a full matador, also to undergo the ceremony conferring such status), apparently a specific use of alternativa right to hold an office, enjoy a benefice, or exercise a public function in turn with another person or group of people (1648 or earlier; originally and frequently in ecclesiastical law, with reference to benefices and church offices), in turn a specific use of alternativa alternative n. The right and ceremony are so called because the young matador is given the right to alternate with full matadors in fights.In to take the alternative (see quot. 1991) after Spanish tomar la alternativa (1872 or earlier).
