单词 allan
释义

allann.

Brit. /ˈalən/, U.S. /ˈælən/, Scottish English /ˈalən/
Forms: 1600s– allen, 1700s– allan, 1700s– aulin, 1800s allin, 1900s– aalin (Shetland), 1900s– alan, 1900s– alen.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare Norwegian regional aale , Swedish regional al , Danish regional al , aal , all in sense ‘urine, liquid dung’ (see addle n.), and the belief that the bird forced other birds to void excrement, which it would then devour (compare the etymology of scouty-aulin n. and dirty allan n., and see quot. 1771 at dirty allan n.); or perhaps compare Swedish regional alle (also alla ) the little auk, Alle alle, (also) the black guillemot, Cepphus grylle, (chiefly Finland; also ala , al ) the long-tailed duck, Clangula hyemalis, although there is little similarity between these birds and the allan. Compare later scouty-aulin n., dirty allan n.Frequently associated by folk etymology with the common Scottish male forename Alan. Compare also Scots and Irish English (northern) allan-hawk, in the same sense (1880 in Ulster, 1887 in the Solway Firth), but also used earlier of several other seabirds, including (in Ulster and the Firth of Clyde) the great northern diver, Gavia immer (1820), (in Galloway) the little auk, Alle alle (1824), and (in Ulster) the red-throated diver, Gavia stellata (1880).
Scottish (chiefly Orkney and Shetland).
A predatory seabird; esp. the arctic skua, Stercorarius parasiticus. Cf. dirty allan n., scouty-aulin n.
