Etymology: < French embarras obstacle (1552), difficult situation (1561), state of being in a quandary, uncertainty about what to think or what action to take (1660), in Canadian French also accumulation of driftwood obstructing a waterway (c1725 or earlier) < embarrasser embarrass v. Compare Spanish embarazo (beginning of the 14th cent. as †embaraço ), Portuguese embaraço (1556), Italian imbarazzo (first half of the 16th cent. or earlier). Compare embarrassment n.
