1. In Chemistry to distinguish the second in order of the terms of any series. Thus deut-iodide, deuto-bromide, deuto-carbonate, deuto-chloride, deuto-sulphide, etc. The prefix has sometimes been improperly used to indicate the constitution of a compound, as compared with that of the proto- or mono- compound of the same series; but it is now obsolescent, being usually replaced by such prefixes as sesqui-, di-, tri-, etc., which properly indicate the constitution.
