单词 devil dog
释义

devil dogn.

Brit. /ˈdɛvl ˌdɒɡ/, U.S. /ˈdɛv(ə)l ˌdɔɡ/, /ˈdɛv(ə)l ˌdɑɡ/
Forms: see devil n. and dog n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: devil n., dog n.1
Etymology: < devil n. + dog n.1A suggestion that sense 2 was originally a translation of a German compound used by German forces as a nickname for the US Marines they fought in 1918 is widespread, but cannot be substantiated. The alleged German form cited in quot. 1918 at sense 2 does not show the expected combining form of the first element and has an ungrammatical plural ending. A German compound Teufelshund (plural Teufelshunde ) is attested in other senses, especially relating to supernatural or mythical animals (19th cent. or earlier; compare sense 1).
