Etymology: < post n.5 + holder n.1, ultimately after Dutch posthouder (late 17th cent. with reference to the Dutch East Indies, early 20th cent. or earlier with reference to the Dutch West Indies; now historical).In quot. 1812 after German Posthalter (1811 in the passage translated in quot. 1812; apparently after the Dutch word; compare German Posthalter ‘postmaster’, ‘person in charge of a post (post n.3) station’ (end of the 16th cent. or earlier; now hist.)).
In Dutch colonial administration: a civil official in charge of a trading settlement or post. Now historical.
