(1856) 7 61) < ancient Greek δι- di- comb. form + κυν- , κύων dog (see cyno- comb. form) + -όδον (see -odon comb. form); compare -odont comb. form. Any of numerous extinct, herbivorous mammal-like reptiles of the group Dicynodontia (order Therapsida), characterized by a heavily-built body, short legs and tail, and typically no teeth apart from two tusks in the upper jaw, found commonly as fossils from the Permian and Triassic periods.The Dicynodontia are now regarded as an infraorder that constitutes the majority of the suborder Anomodontia, and the latter name is more commonly used.
